LESSON 17.  SERVING OTHERS

“Eucharist: We Give Thanks and Praise”

  1. Loving Service  (Based on Jn 13:4-5, 12-15)
  • Reader 1:  At the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples about God’s love.  He also showed them how he wanted his followers to love and help others.
  • Reader 2:  During the supper Jesus rose from the table and took off his outer garments.  He took a towel and tied it around his waist.  Then he poured water into a basin.  He began to wash the disciples’ feet.  Then he dried them with the towel around his waist.
  • Reader 3:  Washing people’s feet before they ate was usually the job of a servant.  Jesus was not a servant, but the leader of the Apostles.  Yet he still washed their feet.
  • Reader 4:  Jesus said, “Do you know what I have done for you?  If I, the master and teacher, have served you, then you ought to serve one another.  I have given you a model to follow.  As I have done for you, you should also do for others.”
  • Let’s Talk
    • How did Jesus serve his disciples at the Last Supper?
    • What was Jesus teaching the disciples by his actions?
    • What are ways Christians serve others today?
  1. We Act Like Jesus
  • Reader 1:  At the Last Supper, Jesus gave his disciples a mission, or special job. He told them to show God’s love by serving others.  The same thing happens at Mass today.  The Eucharist fills us with God’s love.  We receive grace, a share in God’s own life.  Inspired by the Holy Spirit, you can serve others, too.
  • Reader 2: The word mass means “sent.” As Mass ends the priest sends us out to act like Jesus in today’s world.  We receive a mission to serve others.
  • Reader 3:  After Communion, the priest gives everyone God’s blessing.  He says, “May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”  We and everyone assembly make the Sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.”
  • Reader 4:  Then the priest says, “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.”  We answer, “Thanks be to God.”
  • The Mass is over, but the effects of the Eucharist continue through us.  Jesus is with us every day of the week He helps us love and serve everyone we meet.
  1. We Love and Serve

Reader 1: Heavenly Father, you know there are many needs in today’s world.  Fill us with your love so that we may serve as Jesus did.

Reader 2: When someone needs food,

All:  Lord, help us serve with love.

Reader 3: When someone needs shelter,

All:  Lord, help us serve with love.

Reader 4: When someone needs clothing,

All:  Lord, help us serve with love.

Reader 1: When someone needs extra help,

All:  Lord, help us serve with love.

Reader 2: When someone needs a friend,

All:  Lord, help us serve with love.

All:  Lord God, we love you and we glorify you.  May we enjoy the gift of your love and spread it everywhere through loving service.  We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son.  Amen.

4/28/24 Dear Parent,

1/ I have learned that Jesus served his disciples by washing their feet.  Jesus wants us to serve others, too.  You can help me prepare for First Holy Communion by discussing how Eucharist strengthens you to love and serve others each day.

WE BELIEVE Prayer is lifting one’s mind and heart to God.  In prayer we praise God, ask God for his gifts.  We also pray for other people.  Prayer is the best way to stay on the right path.
